Abstract

Social identity is influenced by mental structures and discourse. This study aims to study in depth the role of communication technologies in the structure of social identity of young people with a qualitative method of grounded theory. The sampling method is purposeful of the maximum difference type that in-depth interviews with 9 experts continued until theoretical saturation. The type of perception of social identity and related categories was discovered by Grand Theoretical Method using Maxqda software. The results of the study showed that there are three types of self-perception among young people, which are: the existing self, the pretended self and the desired self, which are expressed in the form of three levels of global, religious, national and ethnic identities. The positive consequences of using communication technologies in defining the social identity of young people are: 1. Strengthening social participation; 2. raising awareness; 3. Strengthen integration at all levels of identity. The extracted negative consequences are: 1. Cultural instability; 2. Decreased trust; 3. Generation gap; 4. Reduce interactions in real world. Also extracted strategies to reduce the negative consequences of the use of communication technologies are: intelligent policy-making, proper education and media literacy.
