Social identity is inherently fluid and multidimensional, continuously evolving under the influence of historical, political, and cultural developments. It is formed and refined through the dynamic interplay between individual choices and the structural constraints of society. As a fundamental and interdisciplinary concept, social identity plays a decisive role in understanding collective behaviors, patterns of cooperation and competition, and processes of social transformation. The aim of this study is to examine and identify the dimensions and components of social identity in Iran.
This research was conducted using the meta-synthesis method along with the seven-step model proposed by Sandelowski and Barroso. Through the meta-synthesis approach, previous studies conducted between the years 1390 and 1403 of the Iranian calendar were reviewed. Out of 225 articles and theses, 80 studies were ultimately selected based on specific meta-synthesis criteria. The findings led to the extraction of various codes, and after multiple rounds of review and the integration of primary findings into sub-categories, ten main dimensions of social identity were identified in order of frequency: national, ethnic, religious, media, group, supra-group, individual bricolage, cultural, gender, and body-consumption. Subsequently, a comprehensive model was presented, outlining the most significant and multifaceted components that constitute social identity.
